A term of employment is the length of time that an individual is employed by a company or organization. This can be a specific "fixed" period of time, such as six months or one year, or it can be an "indefinite" period, such as "at will" employment (in the United States). The term of employment is typically specified in the employment contract, and it can be renewed or extended at the discretion of the employer if there is a fixed term.

Fixed terms are relatively rare and carry a risk that the employer may have to pay the balance of the fixed term if the employer dismisses the employee before the end of the fixed term. Indefinite term employment relationships are far more common.

goHeather employment contracts offer the choice to define the term of employment as either fixed term or indefinite.
